Unfortunatly some hosting companies don't let you handle custom 404 errors in your website. I mean the cheap ones. They like to shove some ads in the user's face instead.

I can however understand that, because our goal here is the same. Even if the user didn't find the right content we want to keep him on the website and perhaps show his some ads or whatever.

Using proper 404s and 301s are both essential, it's worth the time to set them up.

Mark over at The Niche Store Builder (http://www.thenichestorebuilder.com) has an article about error pages in WP. Could be worth a look.

I should have specified that further; Wordpress does correctly handle 404s, but there are some which don't.

If you'd like to know how your server is handling them, just check a status code tool, like this one: http://www.seoconsultants.com/tools/headers.asp

It will show you the exact response code your server is returning. You want to see 404 for pages which are not there, 200 for normal OK pages, and 301 for any pages you want to redirect with a rewrite rule.

Hmm, so the way WordPress handles this by default for example, is wrong? Or correct?
Which CMS does this correctly and which doesn't?
