A fantastic article. I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to persuade somebody I work for to allow me to rebuild his company website using semantic mark-up, and inline with WCAG, W3C Standards. I have cited improved SEO as one of the benefits, but he does not appear to accept what I say. Your article reassured me that I do know what I’m talking about.

You make a good point, SEOs often fail to notice that HTML is itself a form of ontology when coded to standard.

Structuring your HTML so that it creates a profile for each page, and then building the site itself in line with a semantic profile is the ideal way to target the semantic search arriving now in Google and Bing.

I can’t agree more with you for the importance of semantic tags, and the usefulness of it from SEO point. Adding to the tags you have mentioned I feel an images alt attribute also carries a considerable weight.
