Those were really techniques which are unhealthy for a site… In cases where your site has this great reputation when it comes to search engine ranking and page rank, it might fall into a situation wherein it could be destroyed if site owners follow and uses some of these techniques. In maintaining for a site’s credibility, one should see to it that it follows certain rules.

Specific techniques in which I hated so much are “buying links” and “duplicate contents”..

I sometimes wonder who died and made Google the absolute and total God of the sub universe that is the internet.

And it wouldn’t be so bad having an absolute monarchy if they actually knew what they where doing.

Google’s answer to search term relevance is back links, well who has more back links than say Amazon and far from being an authority site, all they are trying to do is basic IM.

Here you are trying to make a buck flogging a click bank eBook and Google sends out its anti terrorist bots to find and destroy and the mighty Amazon rests on its laurels on most Google first page results for any search term which it sells a product for.

Might is right or as the infamous Benjamin Franklin once quoted “Force shites upon reasons back”

I understand that Google does not allow people to buy or sell links on their sites. However, what about all those sites that offer banner ads on their website. How is that ok yet text links arent?

Hi Barry, awesome post!! I believe this is something that all the SEO beginners should take a look at before optimizing their first websites. I am sure that such articles will save them a lot of time! In addition, I would add as number 6 that webmasters should be very accurate with trying to make money on their blog using scripts like Google AdSense. Thanks again and good luck!

We’ve always maintained to our clients that buying links is bad practice but you still get the odd one or two that would rather do this then spend out on natural, progressive optimisation and content building strategies. They see these processes as a money sink. I think in a future Blog post we’ll link to articles such as this.

I’ve never thought that inactivity was so important. I agree completely wiht all items in this list but I think duplicate content can easily destroy your site, it’s very important. Google says in its webmasters guidelines we have to publish only original content.

I would like to comment on the duplicate content. For me duplicate content penalize is just a myth. Because I have already read lot of blogs and they have duplicate contents but still they rank well.
